Our world is made up of different ethnic groups that bring their own cultural backgrounds to our communities, schools, workplaces, and religious institutions. It is necessary that practitioners understand what cultural diversity is and how to develop and utilize cultural competencies in the workplace and in our treatment with individuals diagnosed with mental health and substance use disorders. It is important that we do a self-examination of our own implicit and explicit biases and be aware of how they can and do contribute to unfair treatment of certain ethnic groups. We will exam our own biases and we all have them and further develop cultural competencies to help us better provide equal treatment to all ethnic groups.
